Automatcafé (also automatic café) is a café where the sale of goods takes place via vending machines . [1]

Automatic dispensers who, when throwing coins in , gave the customer access to various kinds of goods were widespread in Europe in the 1880s . At the international craft fair in 1886 , the German chocolate manufacturer Ludwig Stollwerck and the inventor Max Sielaff were able to present an "automatic pavilion" where visitors could get food and drink via the vending machines. Stollwerk had previously exclusively used the machines to sell chocolate, but soon opened a number of "Automathaller" in several German cities, where one could buy different goods in vending machines. In 1896 , Stollwerk opened the world's first automatic café on the Leipziger Straße in Berlin , and then the concept spread rapidly to the rest of the world. [2]

The first automatic café in Denmark opened in 1899 in Matthias Hansens Gård on Amagertorv in Copenhagen, and here one could buy beer , coffee , tea , liqueurs , hot sausages, sandwiches and cakes by putting ten or twenty-five in one of the café's many vending machines. The concept was advertised among other things because it could make it easier for the busy businessman to get a quick lunch. [3] The concept became popular and in the period 1930 - 1964 there were in Copenhagen 20 cafés with "Automat" in their name. [4] Some inexpensive, traditional cafeteria catered to the proliferation of automatic cafés, and the term "antiautomatic" or "anti-automatic cafe" as the name of these cafes was widely used. [5]

Among the well-known Danish inventors Jacob Ellehammer's inventions was a vending machine for liquid goods that was used in Danish automatic cafés. [6]

During the 1950s , the partially serviceable cafeteria took over the functions of the automatic cafés , but despite the fact that the word disappeared from the Danish spelling dictionary in 2001 , [7] the term is still used, for example. an automatic café opened in 2011 at Amager Hospital . [8]
